Kicking off a composting system

Kicking off a composting system

Repurposing some black locust posts cleared from a fence line.  Glad these grow like weeds on the edge of the fields as they last forever and are expensive to buy.  Can't use pressure treated lumber because we don't like poisons in the food :).  The posts are backfilled without any concrete.

Here we've repurposed  scraps from the sawmill which were leftover from milling boards for the chicken shelter.

These bays are wide enough to turn the piles with the tractor bucket.  We plan on building a number of these around the farm for now.  Eventually we'll likely switch to long windrows but this will work for a while.

Getting the temperature up to 130 degrees ... Takes more nitrogen (chicken manure) than you'd think to get the 30:1 ratio when the wood chips we use are around 500:1.

Kids and goats will do that.
